Winter Car Checks and Servicing
The winter is just around the corner and it is advisable to get your vehicles inspected & serviced before the worst weather grips. The following checks may just prevent a breakdown, non start or even a road accident.
1. Tyres - Although the minimum legal requirement of tread is 1.6mm over 3/4 of the tread width, it is advisable in winter weather to have at least 3mm tread on the tyre along with the correct tyre pressure. This will allow better grip on the road surface and reduce the chances of an accident. Also remember to check for bad cuts and bulges on all tyres including your spare as you never know when you may need it.
2. Antifreeze - Make sure you coolant system is topped up with the correct antifreeze sufficient for winter conditions.
3. Screenwash & Wiperblades - Use a screenwash antifreeze to stop water freezing & ensure to check wiper blade condition.
4. Lights - Check that all lights work (with dark mornings & evenings it helps you see but also helps others see you).
5. Engine Oil Level - Check you oil level to ensure your engine has the lubrication it requires for the cold starts in winter.
The above is just a sample of what should be inspected during the winter so it is always advisable when in doubt to get the vehicle professionally serviced and inspected by your local garage. You will find the staff at McKinnon Bros, willing to assist.
